Lahore School of Public Health (LSPH) is situated on the premises of Lahore Medical and Dental College. It was conceived not only as an opportunity to develop the educational direction towards provision of health and disease control but also towards the multiple facets that have bearing on the policies and management.
The importance of Public Health is many times more in the 21st century compared to the previous years. The threats of new diseases, the ease of their transmission to populations around the world, bioterrorism, epidemics of severe malnutrition and obesity, maternal and child health, environmental and occupational impacts on health of the populations and the socio-political impact of policy making in countries are just round the corner. The responsibility of providing protection, both health-wise and financially, to the less advantaged has rapidly become an immense challenge. The health influences on populations facing various disasters is fast becoming a huge challenge at the national and international levels.
Certainly, we need an effective public health system to combat and prepare for this. This will require trained and well-educated public health professionals. Public health professionals are required to receive education and training in a wide range of disciplines fulfilling competencies needed with focus on populations. Therefore, we need to develop this area of education and training in line of improving health of the populations through scientific evidence for changes in policies and their implementation.
We have attempted to adopt a curriculum for running the Master of Public Health (MPH) extended over a period of 24 months using the expertise of the specialists in different subjects from within Pakistan and in collaboration with universities in Europe and USA. The MPH programme will be conducted in affiliation with University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore.
