| The faculty of surgery is
responsible for the teaching and training of
medical students, keeping in view the needs
of our society, in a structured programme.
Clinical teaching is provided at Ghurki
Trust Teaching Hospital, Lahore to third,
fourth and fainl year medical students. They
are taught basic principles in surgery i.e.
infections and inflammation, asepsis,
tumours, immunity and transplantation, fluid
and electrolyte balance, specific infections
like tuberculosis, anastomotic techniques
and principles.
Specialized surgery topics included are
hernia, intestinal obstruction, peptic
ulcer, gall stones, gastro-intestinal
malignancy, skin tumours, thyroid diseases,
breast pathologies, rectal problems, urinary
tract infections and tumours, renal calculi
diseases, etc. they are also taught topics
in Neuro-surgery, Paediatrics surgery,
plastic surgery, Orthopaedic surgery,
vascular surgery and cardio-thoracic
surgery.
These topics are discussed in tutorials,
discouraging a didactic form of teaching.
All the students in a group are expected to
participate in the ensuing discussion.
The students are exposed in a wide
variety of surgical problems, where they are
expected to clerk patients and elicit
clinical signs, under the supervision of a
tutor. They are encouraged to order relevant
investigations, reach a plausible diagnosis
and institute management, on scientific
basis. Thus making them independent thinkers
and ensuring their safe graduation as
medical practitioners.
The process of evaluation is continuous.
Examinations are carried out regularly and
their results are given due weight-age,
these are summative and therefore included
in the final examination results. |
